Family Travel Guide: Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta, Canada

The Northern Classics team recently took a family-friendly trip to Banff and Lake Louise for an exciting photoshoot. This adventure offered stunning mountain views, activities for all ages, and great spots to dine and unwind. Here’s a guide to where we stayed, what we did, and our top spots for food and fun.

Where We Stayed

Fairmont Banff Springs
Our home base at Fairmont Banff Springs was nothing short of magical. The outdoor pool became a daily highlight with its perfect temperature and thoughtful extras like life jackets, kick boards, and noodles for the kids. There were snacks for the little ones and poolside champagne for the adults—a treat for everyone!

Our room was stocked with cozy robes and slippers, which the kids loved wearing to the sauna. The staff at the Fairmont was incredible, always going above and beyond. From coloring books at check-in to glow sticks at the bowling alley, they made sure everyone felt welcome and stayed entertained.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Nestled right next to Lake Louise, this hotel’s breathtaking views greeted us every time we stepped outside. The kids enjoyed a unique check-in experience where they could sign their names and pick a toy from a treasure chest. Each night, there was a campfire with s’mores—an unforgettable way to end our days.

What We Did

Banff Gondola
A highlight for everyone, especially the kids! The gondola ride up Banff National Park offered panoramic views that made us feel on top of the world. The kids enjoyed an indoor play center at the top, and the best part? Kids 5 and under rode for free!

Hiking Near Lake Louise
Just a short distance from our hotel, we found a gentle hike that led us to sledding hills and picnic spots. It was an ideal way to explore the area, enjoy a picnic, and take in the scenic surroundings.

Helicopter Ride with Alpine Helicopters
For a thrilling view of the Rockies, we took a 20-minute helicopter tour. The kids were mesmerized by the mountains from above, and the Warrior Lookout Tour provided just the right amount of excitement without feeling too long for little ones.

Outdoor Pool
The outdoor pool at Fairmont Banff Springs was a huge hit. It was just the right temperature - warm enough to be outside for hours but not too hot for the little ones. They have life jackets, kick boards, noodles, and beach balls.

Bowling at Fairmont Banff Springs
The Fairmont Banff Springs’ 5-pin bowling alley was a hit with our group. Even our youngest team members found shoes and balls suited to their size, making it a perfect activity for everyone.

Where We Ate

Lakeview Lounge
Lakeview Lounge at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise offered stunning views, and the kids were entertained with coloring activities while we waited for our food. We enjoyed coffee and hot cocoa while playing board games after our meal—a relaxing family-friendly experience with free meals for kids under 5.

Alpine Social
Conveniently located at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, this spot served fantastic bar food. The dads enjoyed catching a Detroit Lions game, while everyone savored the casual yet delicious fare.

Juniper Bistro
For a change of scenery, we ventured out of the hotel to Juniper Bistro, where brunch was amazing. The kids loved the waffles, and the mountain views from the lookout were a beautiful bonus.

Bowl Valley
Bowl Valley was perfect for a laid-back meal and a round of 5-pin bowling. The kids stayed entertained while the adults got a chance to relax. The pizza and nachos were a hit with everyone.

STOCK Food and Drink
We started many mornings here with fantastic breakfast, including smoothies, avocado toast, and breakfast sandwiches. It is conveniently located in Fairmont Banff Springs. It’s a great place to grab a quick, tasty meal before heading out to explore.
